A few simple steps on day one make a new computer faster, safer and easier to live with.
Run all updates first
Install Windows or macOS updates, then driver and firmware updates from the manufacturer. Restart until nothing new is offered.
Set up backups
Turn on a cloud backup or connect an external drive and schedule regular backups. Test that you can restore a file.
Security basics
- Use a password manager and turn on two-factor authentication for important accounts.
- Keep the built-in antivirus and firewall turned on.
- Remove trial software you do not need.
Move your files
Copy documents and photos from your old device, then check them before wiping the old one.
Wiping your old device
Sign out of accounts and use the built-in reset option to erase it before you sell, recycle or pass it on.
